Biorizon

Shared Research Center Biorizon wants to enable commercial production of bio-aromatics by 2025. To accomplish this, Biorizon will focus on scaling up technology to pave the way for industrial-scale production with continuous processing. We are currently validating our continuous processes and working with industry partners toward the next stage: demonstration. Biorizon aims to be the reliable source for information on functionalized biobased aromatics and to provide excellent networking opportunities. Biorizon spin-off company Relement teamed up with Worlée Chemie and Baril Coatings to successfully demonstrate this game-changing industrial coating: a first of a kind, high performance, waterborne alkyd coating; incorporating Relement's ingredient bio MPA to replace the fossil-based ingredient phthalic anhydride. Within the LigninPLUS project, Biorizon co-initiator VITO aimed to expand the existing pilot infrastructure platform built around LignoValue Pilot (EFRO Flanders) and PILLAR II (Moonshot LSI) for demonstrating innovative lignin processes at an industrially relevant scale to achieve faster innovations in the lignin-to-aromatics value chain. Industry driven Shared Research Center Biorizon focuses on technology development for the production of functionalized biobased aromatics for performance materials, chemicals & coatings.

Looking forward, CBiRC is taking on the ambitious goal of identifying viable routes to go beyond the now mature petrochemical industry by developing innovative biomass-enabled chemicals that provide access to new products that will address new and emerging market needs—e.g., next-generation pharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals, and consumer goods. CBiRC focuses on using biomass to create biobased products that are healthier, sustainable, and more effective alternatives to petrochemical products. CBiRC works to harness those advancements to create biobased chemicals that enhance societal quality of life by improving health care delivery, food preservation and distribution, transportation efficiency, and minimizing environmental impact, among other things. Founded in 2008 with more than $44M in federal, industry, and Iowa State University funding, CBiRC works in tandem with Iowa and the nation’s growing biosciences sector. Over the past 14 years, CBiRC has focused on developing the knowledge needed to transform carbohydrate feedstocks, so abundant in Iowa and the Midwest, into biobased chemicals as direct replacements for petrochemicals. Biomass is a particularly important source given its overall abundance. These biobased chemicals can be used to create next-generation products in diverse markets, including materials, consumer goods, nutraceuticals, agricultural chemicals, therapeutics, specialty chemicals, polymers, etc. Creating sustainable products can only be achieved when the raw materials for their production are generated at a rate comparable to their usage.
