CIRCULAR BIOCARBON

A circular economy system for multi-source biomass conversion to added value products. The overall aim of the CIRCforBIO project proposal is to achieve high GHG emission savings from the substitution of fossil fuels with advanced biofuels as well as to promote the realization of the circular economy concept for biomass.

We are an open-access research, development and demonstration biorefining centre and a subsidiary company of the University of York. We are part of the BioPilotsUK - a collaboration created by four established biorefining open-access centres who recognise the importance of partnerships to develop UK bio-based value chains. We develop methods at the laboratory scale, and scale-up processes to demonstrate their commercial potential, typically at the 1-100 litre or 1-100 kg scale. We are a partner in the BioYorkshire initiative. We are involved in a research project which aims to help UK farmers and growers to target Net Zero and increase crop resilience. The Biorenewables Development Centre are pleased to share that they have joined the BBIA. We were founded from a unique partnership between two well-established research centres at the University of York: the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence and the Centre for Novel Agricultural Products. With biologists, chemists, and innovation advisors we offer a unique combination of multi-disciplinary expertise coupled with pilot-scale processing capabilities in one coordinated centre.

The Circular Bioeconomy Research Group is a multi-disciplinary team integrating expertise in bioresources, sustainability, green chemistry, biotechnology, low emission agriculture and biorefining. Recognised as a leader in bioeconomy research nationally, internationally and partnering in a significant number of research & funded projects.

CBE JU is recognised as a strategic financial instrument for Europe’s biotech and biomanufacturing sector scaling up the production capacity of bio-based chemicals and materials to industrial scale. The CBE JU Programme Office has concluded the evaluation of the 2023 call for project proposals. CBE JU is a €2 billion partnership between the European Union and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) that funds projects advancing competitive circular bio-based industries under Horizon Europe, the EU’s research and innovation programme. CBE JU is the legal and universal successor of BBI JU. CBE JU launches annual calls for project proposals under Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. CBE JU is building on the success of its predecessor, the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU). CBE JU is funding first-of-their-kind biorefineries and demonstration plants to help expand the European circular bio-based economy. Shared Research Center Biorizon wants to enable commercial production of bio-aromatics by 2025. To accomplish this, Biorizon will focus on scaling up technology to pave the way for industrial-scale production with continuous processing. We are currently validating our continuous processes and working with industry partners toward the next stage: demonstration. Biorizon aims to be the reliable source for information on functionalized biobased aromatics and to provide excellent networking opportunities. Biorizon spin-off company Relement teamed up with Worlée Chemie and Baril Coatings to successfully demonstrate this game-changing industrial coating: a first of a kind, high performance, waterborne alkyd coating; incorporating Relement's ingredient bio MPA to replace the fossil-based ingredient phthalic anhydride. Within the LigninPLUS project, Biorizon co-initiator VITO aimed to expand the existing pilot infrastructure platform built around LignoValue Pilot (EFRO Flanders) and PILLAR II (Moonshot LSI) for demonstrating innovative lignin processes at an industrially relevant scale to achieve faster innovations in the lignin-to-aromatics value chain. Industry driven Shared Research Center Biorizon focuses on technology development for the production of functionalized biobased aromatics for performance materials, chemicals & coatings.

The Biorefine Cluster Europe interconnects projects and people within the domain of biobased resource recovery, striving to contribute to a more sustainable resource management.
