A global, 21st century philanthropy, the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation is committed to bridging the frontiers of artificial intelligence, data science, and social impact. The Foundation is the legacy of IDG founder Patrick J. McGovern, who often said, “The best is yet to come.” He recognized the potential for information technology and neuroscience to democratize access to knowledge, improve the human condition, and advance social good. A generation of rapid advances in technology have led us to new possibilities at the intersection of information technology and neuroscience — artificial intelligence and data science.

We are a biomedical research institute working toward a fundamental understanding of biology to drive the next advances in human health. We are a catalyst to take science further in collaboration with UW–Madison. The Morgridges and WARF provided the lead gifts that made the institute possible. The Morgridge Science Communication Incubator Lab questions why scientists may or may not be willing to pursue public engagement opportunities. Improve human health through innovative, interdisciplinary biomedical discoveries, spark scientific curiosity and serve society through translational outcomes, in partnership with the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Beginning in 2004, the partners developed the innovative private research institute model and laid the foundation for the institute’s charter in 2006. With support from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), Morgridge investigator Randy Bartels will be on a quest to break the “ballistic barrier” in biomedical imaging to peer more deeply into living tissue.

The mission of BrainMind is to support and cultivate the most important and impactful ideas in brain science -- focusing our collective energy on critical gating discoveries and structurally underserved areas. To do this, BrainMind is intelligently reorganizing abundant energy, capital, expertise and resources already in the system, using the following guiding principles:. Create a high-consciousness community of powerful and influential people interested in brain science to drive a cultural shift valuing ideas principally on their potential human impact. Establish a roadmap for effective forward progress maximizing impact in brain science, focusing special attention on areas and ideas that are currently under-supported relative to their importance. Infuse these ideas with high consciousness capital, leadership, and network support to grow and scale innovations that can benefit humanity from the lab to society.

To realize the vast potential of tissue engineering and other techniques aimed at repairing damaged or diseased tissues and organs, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center established the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine. The McGowan Institute serves as a single base of operations for the university’s leading scientists and clinical faculty working in the areas of tissue engineering, cellular therapies, and artificial and biohybrid organ devices. The Institute’s mission includes the development of innovative clinical protocols as well as the pursuit of rapid commercial transfer of its technologies related to regenerative medicine. Also critical to the mission is the education and training of the next generation of scientists, clinicians and engineers who will be carrying the field forward toward the ultimate goal of patient benefit. Wagner, PhD, who is a professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, with joint appointments in the Departments of Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering.

The Institute aims to enhance digital governance by supporting timely, actionable research on ethical technology and serving as a meeting ground for technologists, social scientists, policymakers and governance experts, and leaders from the public and private sector. Together, these interdisciplinary partners will create a framework for online activity and growth that supports innovation and focuses on technology for the common good. Through the McCourt Institute, founding partners Sciences Po, Georgetown University and Stanford University, receive grants to support the development of new scientific work conducted by their community of researchers. The Institute supports the goals of Project Liberty, a visionary initiative to transform how the internet works, create a more equitable digital economy, and develop a new civic architecture for the digital world. The technologies that shape our society should be consistent with our shared values.
