The devastating impact of COVID-19 on the general population is well-documented—but less is known about the millions of people living with rare diseases. Our network, now in its fourth five-year funding cycle, is a partnership with funding and programmatic support provided by Institutes, Centers and Offices across NIH.

We are particularly interested in research that incorporates fundamentally new approaches to addressing longstanding problems. We are working to change that by writing reports on the state of these diseases annually in an approachable format accessible to anyone. Collaborative research is at the forefront of our mission and we believe it to be the single most important piece in uncovering the mysteries of the brain. Additionally, through our work we are ensuring the development of improved therapies and alternative treatments for those suffering from mental health illnesses and neurodegenerative diseases today. By empowering the researchers we work with to develop their research into products and procedures, this becomes a reality. We believe everyone should have access to the latest developments in neuroscience research, to be able to advocate for their own health, and to be well informed of new, proven treatment options. We focus on translating research into solutions that can be used right now. Technology has become an integral part of our daily lives and has made vast improvements in so many areas from the way we communicate, connecting us to loved ones in other countries instantly, to capturing memories that sit in our pockets, to tracking how many steps we take in a day and monitoring our blood pressure.

Neurodegenerative diseases and neuronal injuries continue to be an area rife with substantial unmet medical need. Targeting the underlying mechanisms of these diseases is an area of active research for effective therapeutic interventions, but extensive preclinical and clinical efforts have unfortunately resulted in limited success. Magnolia Neurosciences Corporation, created to pursue technologies developed at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Therapeutics Discovery Division and the Neurodegeneration Consortium (NDC), is a New York-based Accelerator Life Science Partner portfolio company. With its $31 million Series A financing announced in August of 2018, Magnolia Neurosciences aims to discover and develop proprietary, potent, and selective therapies for the prevention of neuronal cell death, thereby providing novel treatment options for patients suffering from neurodegeneration and related conditions.

There are so many talented researchers with innovative ideas, funding sometimes is the only thing that is halting progress and breakthroughs. We are advised by our scientific committee to choose which projects to fund, to have the biggest impact. We are open to any type of project that could match the above description of our goal. We are based in the EU as well as in the US to have a wider reach. We are open to any type of project around our 3 mains areas: Prevent, Cure and Care. This loss is the source of our energy to help others in the same fight. We have a big focus on melanoma, but we will also fund projects to fight against cancer in general. Being a small and serious organization, we are able to make disruptive decisions and support original projects if we feel they can have an impact.
