OpenSwitch

The OpenSwitch platform is an open source, Linux-based network operating system (NOS) for disaggregated switches built around OCP-compliant hardware, utilizing an open network installation environment (ONIE) boot loader. OpenSwitch provides a fully-featured control plane stack with Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking protocol support. The OpenSwitch community is an open community started by charter members offering valuable contributions to the community, with the goal of advancing the state of the art of open networking. OpenSwitch serves as a catalyst for accelerating the move to disaggregated networking switches while enabling developers with the tools they need to break free from the limitations of integrated switches, and take control of their networks to better serve their business needs. Charter contributors to OpenSwitch are Hewlett Packard, Accton, Broadcom, Intel, Qosmos, and Dell EMC. NOS is built around a reliable architecture focusing on modularity, and a central state repository. An extensible NOS utilizes modern development tools and offers extensive APIs and management interfaces. The community supports and nurtures efforts, aids OpenSwitch adoption, and facilitates growth of a healthy ecosystem of developers and users.

Building software on open standards to accommodate deployment on low-cost commodity hardware is a practical business strategy, and predicted the way today’s modern global networks would be built. ZebOS, now called OcNOS CP, was the first commercial product from IP Infusion, and became wildly popular upon launch. It is still used today in networking products from the largest Fortune 500 companies and hundreds of global corporations. OcNOS is a carrier-grade Network Operating System that is completely hardware independent, and making the vision of Total Network Disaggregation closer to reality. In today’s increasingly cloud-driven applications, Total Network Disaggregation will be the missing link to provide end-to-end, terabit-scaled performance for Access, Aggregation, Transport and Data Center use cases. Powerful momentum amplifies IP Infusion’s position as leading open networking alternative to legacy vendors such as Cisco, Juniper, and Arista.

ONF’s CORD is a complete integrated platform that can be used to transform the edge into an agile service delivery platform enabling operators to deliver innovative next-generation services. Mininet open source is a widely used virtual test bed and development environment specifically designed for SDN which can be used on any laptop or PC. Open Information Modeling and Tooling (OIMT) is a project targeted at evolving open information models and associated open source tooling software that guides development of SDN platform frameworks and interfaces used to control, manage and orchestrate SDN Networks. Open Transport Configuration and Control (OTCC) is a project to promote common configuration and control interfaces for transport networks in SDN using open source software and software-defined standards. XOS is an integral component of CORD and is a model-based platform for assembling, controlling, and creating services. After an incredible 13 year run over which time ONF has built and launched numerous open source projects into the ecosystem, the ONF has now graduated the work into independent projects hosted by the Linux Foundation (read the press release). The ONF’s existing Technical Steering Teams (TSTs) leading each project will continue to guide the technical work.
