Protection International

Now, we are going through a decentralisation process to create regional hubs that are able to make context-oriented strategic decisions for their teams. We are an international non-profit organisation that supports human rights defenders in developing their security and protection management strategies. PI was formally established in 2007 by former volunteers of the NGO Peace Brigades International who decided to form a new organisation that focused on the preventive and collective approaches to HRDs’ protection. Protection experts, who eventually became the founders of PI, organise the first European Parliament hearing on the newly adopted UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders. PI publishes the report Criminalisation of Human Rights Defenders which aims to provide responses to protection challenges for criminalised HRDs, civil society organisations and rural communities. In coordination with 11 NGOs, PI co-establishes the ProtectDefenders.eu consortium, which is the European Union Human Rights Defenders mechanism to protect human rights defenders from around the world who are in grave, high-risk situations. PIs award-winning photo exhibition “For Those Who Died Trying”(photographed by Luke Duggleby) opens in Geneva. PI brought together a group of interdisciplinary experts from the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Southeast Asia to craft a list of principles for “redefining the risk approach” which were later called The Risk Analysis and Protection Plan Principles.

Please note that we are not a funding organization and are generally not able to provide grants or financial support to other organizations. Unfortunately, we are unable to consider unsolicited volunteer applications. Founded in 1981, PBI has many years of experience working alongside human rights defenders, opening and protecting space for peace, conflict transformation and the defence of human rights in 14 countries. We currently provide protection and support to brave Human Rights defenders who are risking their lives in Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico and Nicaragua/Costa Rica. Through ProtectDefenders, PBI is able to provide a limited amount of support directly to HRDs in countries where we work.

We are doing this by delivering research, consulting and training, unlocking the power of peace across all three. Established in 2007, IEP has significantly influenced global narratives on matters of security, defence, terrorism and development. We use research to show that peace is a positive, achievable measure of well-being and development. Research remains central to our mission, driven by a dedicated team developing global and national indices, calculating the economic cost of violence, analysing country level risk and fragility, and understanding Positive Peace. Central to our ethos is the understanding that peace extends beyond the mere absence of conflict. Established in 2007 by Steve Killelea AM, IEP has significantly influenced global narratives on matters of security, defence, terrorism and development. IEP research regularly features in leading international media publications including the New York Times, The Guardian, The Economist, Deutsche Welle, Washington Post, CNN, and the BBC.
