The Baker Institute for Public Policy is a non-profit, nonpartisan policy research organization based at Rice University in Houston, Texas. The Baker Institute is home to more than 200 leading experts from academia, the private sector and government hailing from all over the world. Our fellows provide the highest quality research and analysis on critical foreign and domestic public policy issues. Satterfield is the Director of the Baker Institute for Public Policy. The Honorable Linnet Deily is the Chair of the Board of Advisors. The Baker Institute was founded by Rice University in 1993 — the culmination of a long-standing relationship between the Baker family and Rice University. In our 30-year history, we have earned a reputation for providing trusted, data-driven research on critical foreign and domestic policy issues. Since its founding, the Berggruen Institute has forged new conceptual frameworks to meet the challenges and harness the opportunities of the arriving future. In 2010, Nicolas Berggruen and Nathan Gardels sat down with a group of scholars, business leaders, and political veterans in California to contemplate the economic and political stresses caused by the global financial crisis, the widespread perception of failing political institutions and Western democracies, and the question of how China’s rise would affect international cooperation and governance in the 21st century. In California, we are working to integrate deliberative institutions into the direct democracy process and to engage leading Silicon Valley entrepreneurs with the state’s governor in the idea of sharing wealth in the digital age through universal basic capital. Since 2015, Berggruen Fellows have published more than 50 books; written op-eds for media including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Financial Times; contributed articles to the Institute’s Noema Magazine; authored white papers; provided congressional testimony; and served as expert consultants to the UN, the WHO, and other governing bodies with global impact. OctoberAnnual Berggruen Prize for Philosophy & Culture Awarded to American Sociologist Patricia Hill Collins. The Berggruen Governance Index Project is a collaborative project between the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs and the Berggruen Institute. DecemberAnnual Berggruen Prize for Philosophy & Culture Awarded to Japanese Philosopher Kojin Karatani. Published by the Berggruen Institute, Noema explores the transformations sweeping our world publishing thoughtful, rigorous, adventurous pieces by voices from both inside and outside the Institute.

CSEP is based in New Delhi and registered as a company limited by shares and not for profit, under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 1956. CSEP started in 2013 as the Brookings Institution India Center (BIIC), an overseas centre of the Brookings Institution, one of the world’s oldest and premier think tanks. CSEP seeks to carry forward the legacy of BIIC and build upon it by further expanding the research agenda and sharpening the policy insights. CSEP inherits Brookings India’s personnel, values and funding structures. We are also conveners by bringing together policymakers, academics, diplomats, industry insiders, media practitioners and other experts for a frank exchange of ideas about key policy challenges in India, the region and the world. CSEP researchers participate frequently in public events and write for leading Indian and global publications to disseminate their work to wider audiences. All of CSEP's research and engagements is driven by our core values of ‘Independence, Integrity, Impact’. CSEP does not hold an institutional view on any subject.

On behalf of the George Washington University Board of Trustees, welcome to the George Washington University community. I am honored to represent the university as Chair of the Board of Trustees and equally proud to be an alumna who holds in the highest regard all that GW has to offer - not only to our students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends, but to our local, national, and global community. The GW Board of Trustees is responsible for our university's governance, and as a result, this assembly is integral to determining how the university meets the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
