We are dedicated to making the industrial arts accessible to everyone interested. The Crucible is a nonprofit organization and art school dedicated to making the fine and industrial arts accessible for all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Our work is centered in Oakland and the East Bay, where we provide high-quality, fun classes and workshops to thousands of people each year. With eighteen departments, including welding, blacksmithing, glass flameworking, ceramics, and more, there is a class and medium for every interest and level of experience. We also offer free programming, scholarships, and paid leadership opportunities for youth and adults who live locally and otherwise could not participate. As an innovative hub built around the industrial arts, The Crucible is a catalyst for individual growth and vibrant community connections. A leader in the Bay Area arts community, The Crucible is widely recognized for its exceptional learning experiences, rich and varied arts programs, skilled and committed faculty, and unparalleled educational facilities. As the largest nonprofit industrial arts education facility in the United States, we are committed to meeting individuals where they are, welcoming diverse voices, and using art to support creative exploration, personal transformation, and local economic development.

With your help, we are able to provide workspace, tools, training, and education to our community, while forging lasting links to a local tradition of craftsmanship. The Steel Yard is a non-profit industrial art center and shared studio located in Providence, RI. We’re an arts maker space and non-traditional craft school offering courses & educational programs in blacksmithing, welding, jewelry, foundry, and ceramics. We host an artist residency program for emerging and mid-level artists that provides full access to our studios and equipment. Our 3.8-acre award-winning campus is the perfect venue for public and private events and one-of-a-kind fundraisers like our annual Halloween Iron Pour. Funding provided in part by a grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, through an appropriation by the Rhode Island General Assembly, a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and private funders. The Steel Yard offers unique courses in the industrial arts for students of all skill levels. Your donation to The Yard helps us further our mission of fostering creative and economic opportunities.
