We are proud that our LCA demonstrates how we will successfully decarbonise the extraction and refinery process. We are on track to commence construction of the UK's first large-scale merchant lithium refinery in 2023. We are now progressing through the latter stages of the Teesside project’s development phase. We believe that lithium is fundamental to this change and many, including manufacturers of electric vehicles, agree. That lithium market currently consumes around 80% of its own lithium chemicals production. Together, they worked on a plan to produce battery-grade lithium sustainably, first creating the product under lab conditions. We will unlock UK circular economy opportunities in battery recycling and will sell our by-product for reuse in green construction materials manufacturing. Our proven, delivery-focused team of employees and external partners has a track record of successfully completing multi-billion-pound critical infrastructure projects.

We are developing innovative, best-in-class, sustainable technology to economically extract lithium from Cornish granites and believe our project will be world-beating in terms of environmental performance. We are on a fast trajectory, actively pursuing ambitious goals, and are therefore recruiting for various roles. As a result of this new joint venture with Imerys, the next stage is a pre-feasibility study with the objective of building a plant capable of producing over 20,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate per year, for at least 30 years. In 2019 we built the UK’s only dedicated lithium metallurgical research laboratory in Cornwall. In 2021 we built Europe’s only lithium pilot plant. The transaction will bring together Imerys’ expertise in mining, infrastructure in Cornwall, R&D and process development capabilities, as well as its lithium mineral resources, with British Lithium’s bespoke technology and state-of-the-art lithium pilot plant, which recently produced battery-grade lithium carbonate. Car electrification is based on the need for a greener future, yet most lithium production is currently powered by coal in China.
