Equine and Ovine Blood Products was a family partnership founded in 1978 with a contract to supply sterile Horse and Sheep blood to Gibco BRL in Paisley. Having successfully gained credibility within the clinical sector for sterile animal blood products, E&O diversified its product range to include the manufacture of ready-to-use culture media. This was a major stepping-stone in the company’s growth and offered further opportunities for export into mainland Europe and the Middle East. Further product diversification into the Industrial and Pharmaceutical market followed the successful acquisition of the assets of Fred Baker / Biotrace International’s operation in Runcorn in early 2008. With the Burnhouse manufacturing facility approaching its full capacity, productivity was going to be compromised and new accommodation had to be sourced. With ever increasing demands for Horse and Sheep blood both for inhouse manufacture of plates and export enquires, the directors took the opportunity of investing in a local farm to facilitate the demand. E&O Laboratories Ltd’s head office is based in Central Scotland with two fully automated manufacturing facilities and two licenced donor animal blood harvesting farms. E&O Laboratories Ltd is certified to ISO 9001:2015 & ISO 13485:2016 for “The development, manufacture and supply of ready-to-use culture media, dehydrated culture media, blood products, microbiological supplements/reagents and microbiological analytical services.”.

Cetrimide, a quaternary ammonium compound, is a mixture of different alkyltrimethylammonium salts, primarily tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide. It serves as a potent antiseptic and disinfectant, widely used in medical settings and personal care products. Its mechanism of action involves disrupting the cellular membranes of microbes, leading to leakage of cell contents and eventual cell death. This makes cetrimide highly effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria, fungi, and other pathogens, thereby preventing infections in wounds and surgical sites. Additionally, cetrimide is a surfactant, which means it lowers the surface tension between substances, making it useful in various pharmaceutical formulations to enhance the solubility and efficacy of drugs. In the cosmetic industry, cetrimide finds application as an emulsifying agent in shampoos and conditioners, improving texture and manageability of hair. The compound's versatility and effectiveness in destroying microorganisms have cemented its role as a crucial ingredient in healthcare and hygiene products, contributing significantly to infection control and public health safety. Despite its widespread use, it is essential to utilize cetrimide in appropriate concentrations, as higher doses can be irritating to the skin and mucous membranes, underlining the importance of balance in its application across different domains.
1. Antiseptic Properties

Cetrimide boasts a favorable safety profile, characterized by its low toxicity to human cells. This makes it suitable for regular use in both medical and personal care products, providing peace of mind for users concerned about the potential side effects associated with frequent exposure to chemical agents.
4. Surface Cleaning Efficiency
Its effectiveness in cleaning surfaces is another key benefit. Cetrimide is not only used on the skin but also as a disinfectant for surfaces, making it a versatile option in maintaining hygiene in clinical, public, and domestic environments. This dual-purpose use sets it apart from many alternatives that are not safe or effective for use on both skin and surfaces.
1. Quality Assurance
Ensure the supplier has a robust quality management system in place, like ISO certification, specific to the pharmaceutical or chemical industry. This guarantees the Cetrimide complies with industry standards and regulations.
2. Purity Levels
Check the purity levels of Cetrimide offered by the supplier. For pharmaceutical applications, a high purity level is crucial for safety and efficacy.
3. Supply Chain Reliability
Assess the supplier's ability to provide consistent and timely deliveries. A reliable supply chain minimizes the risk of shortages or delays in your operations.
4. Regulatory Compliance
Verify that the supplier's Cetrimide meets all local and international regulatory requirements for manufacturing, handling, and distributing chemicals.
5. Technical Support
The availability of knowledgeable technical support from the supplier can be invaluable for addressing any product-related issues or inquiries that may arise.
6. Cost-Effectiveness
While not compromising on quality and compliance, consider the cost-effectiveness of the supplier's offering. Competitive pricing can significantly impact overall project budgets.
