Dielectric elastomers are a type of electroactive polymer that can store electrical energy, and can be used to produce electrical and mechanical actuation when a voltage is applied. They are composed of two distinct materials: a dielectric elastomer layer and an electrode layer. The dielectric elastomer layer is a thin film of rubber-like material that is compliant, electrically insulating, and highly stretchable. The electrode layer is usually made of metal foil, metal mesh, or carbon-filled rubber and is capable of conducting electricity.
