Flow batteries are a type of rechargeable battery in which energy is stored in two tanks of liquid electrolyte which are pumped through a central stack that contains an ion exchange membrane. This membrane separates the two electrolytes, allowing ions to move from one side to the other, thus creating an electric current. This electric current is then used to power devices or provide energy storage. Flow batteries are often used in renewable energy applications, as they can store large amounts of energy for long periods of time and are relatively easy to maintain.
