We are studying streams, rivers, and lakes across the US and around the world to understand how they are responding to threats like climate change, salinization, algal blooms, and novel contaminants. We are studying the effects of invasive pests and pathogens, biomass energy, pollution, and forestry practices to inform sound forest management. We are working to understand the urban ecosystem and develop nature-based solutions to combat challenges brought about by climate change. Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies is dedicated to understanding how ecosystems work. Our scientists are global experts in the ecology of: freshwater, forests, disease, and cities. Founded in 1983 by eminent ecologist Gene Likens, Cary Institute is one of the world’s leading independent environmental research organizations. Sharing our science is key to our mission. Through a range of programming, we are enhancing the ecological literacy of students, decision makers, and the public, and training the next generation of ecologists and resource managers.

It is a highly destructive form of mining that involves blasting off entire mountaintops in order to reach coal seams underneath, resulting in the destruction of ecosystems, contamination of surface and groundwater, and the displacement of local communities.
