Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is a process that uses the temperature difference between cold deep ocean water and warm surface water to generate electricity. OTEC systems use a closed-cycle process which pumps warm surface water through a heat exchanger, where the heat is transferred to a low-boiling-point fluid (such as ammonia) and vaporizes it, driving a turbine and generating electricity. Cold deep ocean water is then pumped through a separate heat exchanger, where the vapor from the first heat exchanger condenses, cooling the fluid and creating a cycle that can be repeated to generate power. OTEC is a renewable energy technology with the potential to provide baseload power to coastal areas around the world.
