Description

The study investigates the genetic similarities between spontaneous hemangiosarcoma (HSA) in dogs and cats and angiosarcoma (AS) in humans. Researchers sequenced around 1,000 cancer genes in 41 HSA cases from dogs and cats, including visceral and skin types. They found that visceral HSAs in dogs with concurrent splenic and cardiac tumors were not independent, supporting the idea of metastasis. Mutations in driver genes like TP53, PIK3CA, ATRX, GRIN2A, and LRP1B were common in both canine/feline HSAs and human AS. Additionally, UV-related mutations were present in canine cutaneous HSAs, mirroring AS patterns. The study also identified several potential pathogenic variants in the germlines of dogs and cats linked to human AS risk genes.
