Description

A study examined the relationship between elevated serum gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) levels and renal adenocarcinoma in two dogs. Over three years, a 15-year-old male Terrier mix and a 6-year-old female Labrador Retriever presented with similar blood work abnormalities, notably high serum GGT activity, but otherwise unremarkable physical exams. Imaging revealed renal masses in both dogs, which were confirmed as carcinomas through histopathology. Immunohistochemical staining showed intense positivity for GGT in the tumors. After the affected kidney was surgically removed from the Terrier mix, its GGT levels normalized. In contrast, the Labrador Retriever was euthanized, and lung metastasis was found during postmortem examination. This case highlights that while renal carcinoma is rare in dogs, a significant increase in serum GGT can be a key indicator of this condition, especially when other liver enzymes remain normal. Elevated serum GGT may also serve as a useful biomarker for monitoring disease progression and response to treatment, as demonstrated by the normalization of GGT levels following surgery. PBMCs are used in antibody discovery due to their role in the immune response. Antibody-secreting cells (ASCs), a type of PBMC, are an excellent source of high-affinity antibodies with therapeutic potential. Millions of PBMCs can be isolated and screened to identify antigen-specific ASCs that secrete antibodies with desirable properties. One method involves microfluidic encapsulation of single ASCs into an antibody capture hydrogel, followed by antigen bait sorting using flow cytometry, enabling the rapid discovery of monoclonal antibodies. These antibodies can then be further characterized for their binding affinity and neutralizing capacity, making PBMCs a valuable resource for developing antibody-based drugs and studying immune responses.
