The matured Li-ion battery technology occupies the market niche of portable electronics and electric vehicles, but massive transition from ICEs to EVs and upscaling this technology for the energy grid application will inevitably lead to the significant gap between battery grade lithium production and market needs resulting in a higher price of batteries. At the first glance, Na and K-ions appear to be not competitive with Li-ions because of their higher atomic mass and larger sizes, which are expected to lower the energy and power density, but with the help of Happy Electron’s anode material (nC) situation can significantly change. Here our testing results of nC in half-cells versus metallic sodium (Na): Electrode loading: 7.5 mg/cm2 Voltage window: 0.001 – 1.5 V Initial Coulombic Efficiency = 86.2 %. Replacing Li with its analogues, such as sodium (Na) and potassium (K), provides a compelling alternative due to their abundance in the earth crust and low cost. Our anode material offers viable opportunities to create efficient sodium-ion batteries preserving the conventional battery architecture.
