Our goal with licensing is to spread the Duesenfeld process as the most environmentally friendly recycling process and thus achieve the greatest possible CO2 savings for the environment. We are very pleased to receive this award. The deep discharge of the batteries using the Duesenfeld process ensures safe and efficient discharging of cells, modules or packs connected in series. As the CO2 savings from electromobility are intended to slow down global warming, we must not allow them to be cancelled out by improper recycling of batteries. In the environmentally friendly process from Duesenfeld, no CO2 is generated during mechanical recycling, and there are no toxic filter materials to be disposed of. As the only process in mechanical recycling, the Duesenfeld process requires no exhaust gas scrubbing.

Lithium recycling refers to the process of reclaiming and reprocessing lithium from spent batteries and other sources to produce new lithium-based products. This procedure is pivotal in the sustainable management of lithium resources, a critical component in the manufacturing of rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), consumer electronics, and large-scale energy storage systems. As global demand for lithium surges, fueled by the transition towards renewable energy and electrification of transport, the practice of lithium recycling is gaining importance. It serves not only to alleviate the pressure on natural lithium reserves but also to minimize the environmental impact associated with lithium mining activities. By recovering lithium from end-of-life products, the recycling process reduces waste, lowers greenhouse gas emissions, and conserves natural resources. Furthermore, it supports the circular economy model, enhancing the efficiency of resource utilization and promoting the sustainability of the battery supply chain. As technology advances, improvements in recycling processes are expected to increase the recovery rate of lithium, thus further contributing to the sustainability and security of its supply. Through these measures, lithium recycling plays a crucial role in meeting the growing demand for lithium in a responsible and environmentally friendly manner, underscoring its significance in the broader context of global efforts towards sustainable development.
1. Environmental Preservation
Lithium recycling significantly reduces the environmental impact associated with lithium mining. By repurposing lithium from used batteries, we decrease pollution and habitat destruction, ensuring a more sustainable approach to meeting the global demand for lithium.
2. Resource Conservation
Lithium is a finite resource, and its recycling helps conserve valuable reserves. This process ensures that lithium can be reused efficiently, reducing the need for continuous mining and thus preserving natural resources for future generations.
3. Energy Efficiency
The process of recycling lithium consumes considerably less energy compared to extracting and processing new lithium. This enhanced energy efficiency not only reduces carbon emissions but also contributes to a lower overall cost in the lithium supply chain.
4. Economic Benefits
Recycling lithium can stimulate local economies by creating jobs in the recycling sector. Additionally, it can lead to cost savings for manufacturers of lithium-ion batteries by providing a cheaper alternative to newly mined lithium, potentially lowering the prices of consumer goods.
While evaluating the different suppliers make sure to check the following criteria:
1. Technology and Process Efficiency
Ensure the supplier uses the latest technology for lithium recycling, optimizing recovery rates and minimizing environmental impact.
2. Environmental Compliance
Verify that the supplier adheres to local and international environmental regulations, emphasizing sustainability and reducing hazardous waste.
3. Capacity and Scalability
Assess whether the supplier has the capacity to handle your volume requirements and the flexibility to scale operations as your needs grow.
4. Cost-effectiveness
Consider the overall cost, including processing fees and potential value recovered from recycled lithium, to ensure the partnership is economically viable.
5. Quality Assurance
Check for quality control mechanisms in place to ensure the purity and usability of the recycled lithium, which is critical for its subsequent applications.
6. Experience and Reputation
Research the supplier’s track record and industry reputation to gauge reliability, expertise, and commitment to customer satisfaction.
7. Regulatory Compliance
Ensure the supplier meets all necessary regulatory requirements, including health, safety, and transportation standards for handling lithium and its compounds.
Lithium recycling has emerged as a crucial process in the battery manufacturing industry, addressing the growing demand for lithium-ion batteries while promoting sustainability. By reclaiming lithium from used batteries, manufacturers can reduce reliance on mining, lower production costs, and decrease environmental impact. This practice supports the production of new batteries with a smaller carbon footprint, catering to the eco-conscious consumer market. In the automotive sector, lithium recycling plays a pivotal role in the electric vehicle (EV) revolution. As the EV market expands, the need for efficient battery solutions escalates. Recycling lithium helps meet this demand, ensuring a steady supply of materials for battery production, thus accelerating the transition to greener transportation options. Another significant application is in the electronics industry, where lithium-ion batteries power a wide array of devices, from smartphones to laptops. Through recycling, companies can recover valuable lithium, mitigating the environmental harm caused by electronic waste. This approach not only conserves natural resources but also aligns with global efforts towards electronic waste reduction. Lastly, the energy storage sector benefits from lithium recycling by enhancing the sustainability of renewable energy systems. Storage solutions, critical for managing the intermittent nature of renewable sources like solar and wind, often rely on lithium-ion batteries. Recycling provides a sustainable means to support the growing demand for energy storage, facilitating a smoother transition to renewable energy landscapes.
Lithium recycling technology is presently at a varied Technology Readiness Level (TRL), generally ranging between TRL 6 to TRL 9, depending on the specific recycling process and the maturity of technological implementation. This range indicates that some lithium recycling methods have reached the demonstration phase in relevant environments (TRL 6), while others have been proven through successful operations (TRL 9). The reasons for this variance primarily stem from technical challenges and breakthroughs. On one hand, the recovery of high-purity lithium, essential for battery production, requires sophisticated chemical processes to separate lithium from other metals and impurities. These processes, such as hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, and direct recycling, have seen significant advancements, enhancing efficiency and scalability. On the other hand, technical hurdles like the complexity of battery compositions, the energy-intensive nature of some recycling methods, and the need for improved lifecycle assessments to ensure environmental and economic viability, have kept some recycling technologies from reaching full commercial deployment. Furthermore, innovations in pre-treatment processes, such as sorting and disassembly, which are crucial for efficient recycling, continue to evolve, reflecting ongoing efforts to optimize lithium recovery rates and reduce environmental impact.
In the Short-Term, lithium recycling is poised to become more efficient through enhancements in pre-treatment processes, such as improved sorting and battery dismantling technologies. These advancements aim to reduce energy consumption and increase the recovery rate of high-value materials. Innovations like hydrometallurgical processes, which use less harmful chemicals and generate less waste, are expected to become more widespread. This phase focuses on optimizing existing frameworks to handle the growing influx of end-of-life lithium batteries. The Mid-Term outlook introduces significant advancements in the automation of lithium recycling processes. Breakthroughs in robotics and AI will enable more precise separation of battery components, leading to higher purity levels of recovered lithium and other critical metals. Additionally, the development of closed-loop recycling systems is anticipated, allowing battery manufacturers to directly reuse recycled materials, thereby reducing the reliance on virgin resources and decreasing the environmental footprint of lithium production. Looking into the Long-Term, the focus shifts towards revolutionary recycling technologies, such as direct lithium extraction from recycled batteries using minimal energy and resource input. Innovations in solid-state battery recycling will also emerge, aligning with the expected shift towards solid-state batteries in the market. These advancements promise to drastically improve the efficiency and sustainability of lithium recycling, making it a cornerstone of a circular economy for the battery industry.
