Griffins
Food, Beverage, material handling
PHS Innovate was the automation supplier selected to supply the new palletizer solution for Griffin’s factory. We designed a SAP-compatible system utilising four ABB robots and integrated stretch wrapping and labelling. Our proposal also included an upgrade to Griffins’ conveyor systems, to help with back pressure and product line control. The new palletizer system was installed while the old system was still running, to enable a staged changeover. Our robots were equipped with standard mechanical gripping heads, which have the versatility required for Griffins’ diverse product range. Compared to Griffins’ old system, this method of holding cases was a significant improvement. The final installation was achieved over two weekends, to ensure minimal impact to production at the factory. Initially, half the production line was directed to the new palletizer system. After a few weeks, when it was clear that everything was running smoothly, total production was directed to the new solution and the old palletiser was decommissioned.

A conveyor belt is a continuous loop of material utilized to transport goods and materials from one point to another within various industrial applications. Typically made from durable materials such as rubber, plastic, or metal, it can be customized in width, length, and design to accommodate specific tasks. In manufacturing and logistics, conveyor belts enhance efficiency by allowing for automated movement of items, reducing manual labor and increasing productivity. They are crucial in assembly lines, warehouses, and packaging facilities, providing streamlined operations and minimizing handling time.
A conveyor belt operates through a system of pulleys that move a continuous loop of material. Typically, the belt is made from a durable material, which can include rubber, fabric, or metal, depending on the application. As the pulleys rotate, one or more of them drives the belt forward, allowing items placed on the belt to be transported from one location to another. The mechanism relies on friction between the belt and the surfaces of the pulleys to maintain movement. Additionally, various sensors and controls can be integrated to monitor the speed and direction, ensuring efficient operation. The design and materials used influence the conveyor belt's load capacity and suitability for specific tasks in industries such as manufacturing, mining, and warehousing.
1. Flat Belt Conveyors
These are the most common type of conveyor belts, featuring a flat surface that moves materials from one point to another with minimal friction. They are often used in manufacturing and assembly operations.
2. Modular Belt Conveyors
Constructed from interlocking plastic segments, modular belts offer flexibility and ease of maintenance. They are ideal for transporting small or irregularly shaped items.
3. Cleated Belt Conveyors
Cleated belts have raised sections or "cleats" that prevent materials from sliding backward. They are particularly useful for transporting materials on an incline or decline.
4. Timing Belt Conveyors
These belts feature teeth that mesh with sprockets to provide precise movement. Timing belts are commonly used in applications requiring synchronization, such as in packaging machinery.
5. Wire Mesh Belt Conveyors
Made from metal wire, these belts allow for airflow and drainage, making them suitable for applications involving hot or wet materials. They are often used in food processing and baking industries.
6. Rubber Belt Conveyors
Rubber belts provide durability and resistance to wear, making them suitable for heavy-duty applications. They are commonly found in mining and bulk material handling sectors.
Conveyor belts are constructed from a variety of materials, each selected based on the specific application and requirements. Commonly used materials include rubber, which provides durability and flexibility, making it ideal for heavy-duty applications. Another prevalent material is polyester, known for its strength and resistance to abrasion, which is beneficial in high-speed operations. Additionally, metal conveyor belts are often used in applications involving heat or extreme conditions, offering robustness and longevity. Plastic belts are also popular for their lightweight nature and resistance to chemicals, making them suitable for food processing and packaging industries.
Various industries rely heavily on conveyor belts for efficient material handling and transportation.
1. Manufacturing
In manufacturing, conveyor belts streamline the production process by moving products between different stations, reducing manual labor and increasing productivity.
2. Food Processing
The food processing industry utilizes conveyor belts to transport raw materials and finished products while maintaining hygiene standards and speed.
3. Mining and Quarrying
Conveyor belts are essential in mining and quarrying for transporting heavy materials like ores and aggregates over long distances.
4. Logistics and Warehousing
In logistics and warehousing, conveyor systems facilitate the movement of packages and goods, enhancing sorting and distribution efficiency.
5. Automotive
The automotive sector employs conveyor belts in assembly lines to ensure a smooth flow of components and vehicles throughout the manufacturing process.
