EIT RawMaterials

Our mission is to connect manufacturing players by promoting talent and entrepreneurship to accelerate sustainable innovation in Europe. We are open to entities from any country eligible for funding under the EU’s current framework programme for research and innovation, Horizon Europe. The manufacturing industry is a global base for prosperity and key to Europe’s economic, social and environmental sustainability. The sector is a main driver of industrial innovation, job creation and growth. EIT Manufacturing is a public-private partnership, co-funded by the European Union and established in 2019. EIT Manufacturing is one of the nine Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KIC) supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). EIT Manufacturing brings together a growing network of top-tier industrial partners, leading academic and research institutions from across the region and innovative startups, scaleups and SMEs. Ultimately, EIT Manufacturing strives to accelerate faster innovation with the potential to improve everyday life globally, help meet Europe’s ambitious climate goals, and ensure that its workforce is ready for tomorrow’s challenges.

ETP SMR is covering the entire range of mineral resources production in Europe. However, the production and tailored provision of mineral raw materials needs more than exploitation and/or recycling. Technology and knowledge is the key to success. Therefore, ETP SMR has also integrated many of Europe’s very strong equipment and technology providers. The ETP SMR was launched on March 2005 and officially recognized by the European Commission in September 2008. The ETP SMR has become over the years a reliable interlocutor of European Institutions, a process that has brought the ETP SMR members to contribute to the SIP for EIP on Raw Materials, develop a Strategic Agenda and commit with the European Commission on the raw materials.

We are home to the university’s international partnerships in the areas of sustainable science, education and industrialization. Our vision is to make a climate friendly, sustainable future in the raw materials sector. We are hopeful that our efforts, impacts and motivation will make us reach our goal – a sustainable planet Earth for all! Our goal is to pave the way for the future of education! We are very glad that Robert Obenaus-Emler was officially appointed Head of the Resources Innovation Center by the Rectorate of the Montanuniversität Leoben on 14 March 2024. In our climate initiatives, we are striving to work towards a zero-carbon economy and a climate resilient society with the vision of enabling Europe to lead the global transformation towards sustainability. We enjoyed high-quality lectures from multiple experts in the field of raw materials, great networking and innovative ideas for the future in mining.This year, the scientific program was organised by the RIC Leoben team, including topics related to digitalization and data processing, underground and surface mineral extraction, and robotics in mining. MaDiTraCe’s fundament is a strong stakeholder process with upstream and downstream industrials from mining to manufacturing industry and large networks involved via the consortia (EIT-RM) and clusters (ISMC) participating in the project.

We are a member of the Climate KIC and the EIT RawMaterials communities working across a range of topics related to geoscience, environmental issues, blue economy and the Green Deal. We are here to facilitate the creation and use of climate services and social entrepreneurship in Europe’s Outermost Regions through local actions by communities and citizens. Our strength is delivering out of the box solutions for technology transfer, foresight and policy analysis, social media based marketing, science communication and public engagement. Located in one of Europe’s Outermost Regions we consider it our mission to actively promote the development of our region, representing its interests through international cooperation. Facilitating technology transfer from research to actual commercialisation is a key area of LPRC’s business. Sustainable Energy Harvesting Systems Based on Innovative Mine Waste Recycling.

The EU project MIREU aims to establish a network of mining and metallurgy regions across Europe. The MIREU project will bring together mining and metallurgy regions from across Europe to work together on improving the conditions for sustainable access and supply of raw materials in the EU. The MIREU consortium is comprised of 30 partners from 17 European mining and metallurgy regions. The MIREU project will bring together European mining and metallurgy regions to work together on improving the conditions for the responsible development and secure supply of raw materials in the EU. The MIREU projects aims to establish a network of European mining and metallurgy regions. The MIREU project is producing European SLO guidelines. A MIREU partner from the Camborne School of Mines – University of Exeter has published an article discussing the need for sustainably sourced raw materials to meet increasing demand and how the UK, in particular the south west, could be part of the addressing these challenges.

GeoERA consisted of 15 3 year projects and started in July 2018. The main objective of GeoERA was to contribute to the optimal use and management of the subsurface. Establishing the European Geological Surveys Research Area to deliver a Geological Service for Europe (GeoERA). The objective of the groundwater theme is to provide data, information and decision-support tools for the protection, sustainable management and improvement of groundwater resources. The European Commission recognises the importance of Raw Materials. The geo-energy, groundwater and raw materials themes share the common objective to provide and disseminate spatial information on their respective resources.
