1962

Recognizing an opportunity, Kerax developed their own blend of cheese wax, Tom loaded it into the company’s small van, and began selling it from dairy to dairy. In 1974, Kerax had expanded sufficiently to move to a new location in Chorley, Lancashire which remains the site used by Kerax to this day. Kerax then operated as part of Duckhams, which led to an exchange of knowledge and investment in the Chorley site and it was during this time, in 1982, when Duckhams introduced their iconic ‘Hypergrade’ brand. Kerax forged ahead once more as an independent business unit, sponsoring a race at Haydock in 1987 to commemorate their 25th anniversary and moving into Phase Six of construction when another new warehouse was built in 1990. Kerax as a whole has continued to grow, increasing from a £4-4.5 million GBP turnover and 20 employees in 2004 to a £40 million GBP turnover and 80 employees. Kerax has been manufacturing and supplying waxes, oils and a variety of bespoke products since the company’s inception in 1962. Today, Kerax’s range of products includes wax for candle manufacture, petroleum jellies for pharmaceutical, cosmetic and industrial applications, plus products for extrusion and surface protection. Founded by Tom Wilcox in 1962, Kerax Ltd has been producing wax blends and lubricants for over sixty years.

Things to know about Paraffin

What is Paraffin?

Paraffin, a term often interchanged with the more technical designation "alkane," refers to a saturated hydrocarbon compound consisting solely of hydrogen and carbon atoms connected by single bonds. This series of molecules is denoted by the general formula CnH2n+2, where "n" represents the number of carbon atoms. Paraffins can be found in various forms, ranging from gaseous to solid states, dependent on the length of the carbon chain. A quintessential feature of paraffin is its non-reactivity, which makes it highly valuable in a multitude of industrial applications. In the liquid form, it serves as a lubricant, coolant, or insulating fluid in electrical and mechanical systems, due to its excellent chemical stability and electrical insulation properties. Solid paraffins, commonly known as paraffin wax, are extensively used in the production of candles, cosmetics, and packaging materials, leveraging their low melting point, malleability, and water-repellent characteristics. Moreover, paraffin plays a crucial role in the laboratory setting, particularly in histology for embedding and preserving biological specimens, owing to its inert nature. Its utility across diverse industries underscores its indispensable impact, highlighting paraffin's role as a multifaceted substance whose properties are pivotal in both everyday products and specialized applications.

Advantages of Paraffin

1. Cost-Effectiveness
Paraffin is significantly more affordable than many alternative materials, such as beeswax or soy wax, making it a cost-effective option for consumers. Its lower price point does not compromise quality, offering substantial value for various applications, including candle making and industrial uses.

2. Long Burning Time
One of the standout features of paraffin is its extended burning time. Compared to other waxes, paraffin burns slower, ensuring that candles last longer. This efficiency not only enhances the user experience but also provides better value for money in the long term.

3. Excellent Scent Throw
Paraffin wax is renowned for its superior scent throw, meaning it releases fragrance more effectively than many alternatives. This characteristic makes it an ideal choice for scented candle production, as it efficiently diffuses the fragrance throughout the environment, creating a more pleasant and inviting atmosphere.

4. Versatility
The versatility of paraffin is unparalleled. It can be used in a wide range of products, from candles and cosmetics to waterproofing agents and therapeutic treatments. Its adaptability across industries is a testament to its effectiveness and reliability as a preferred choice.

How to select right Paraffin supplier?

While evaluating the different suppliers make sure to check the following criteria:

1. Purity Level
Ensure the paraffin meets the required purity standards for your specific application, whether it's for cosmetics, food packaging, or industrial uses.

2. Oil Content
Verify the oil content of the paraffin wax, as it can affect the quality and the finish of the product it's used in.

3. Melting Point
Consider the melting point of the paraffin, which should align with the temperature requirements of your process or product.

4. Color and Clarity
Assess the color and clarity of the paraffin, especially if it will be used in applications where appearance is important.

5. Consistency in Supply
Check for suppliers who can guarantee consistent supply volumes over time to avoid disruptions in your production.

6. Compliance with Regulations
Ensure the supplier complies with local and international regulations, particularly if the paraffin will be used in food-grade, cosmetic, or therapeutic products.
