We develop first-of-a-kind projects in the wastewater, mobility and power generation sectors. B9 Energy Storage Ltd was formed in 2013 as a Power-to-X project developer to provide practical solutions to the worsening problem of wind farm curtailment in Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland. Islandmagee Energy is a wholly owned subsidiary of Harland & Wolff Group Holding plc. It is the only large-scale gas storage project in the entire island of Ireland and lends itself naturally to boosting the security of energy supply to the UK. The gas storage project was first established in 2010 when a layer of salt was discovered 1500m underneath Larne Lough. This form of storage allows for high deliverability rates into and out of the store, helping to balance the gas network in times of peak stress. Mutual Energy’s mission is to operate its business in the interests of consumers and return savings to Northern Ireland’s customers over the lifetime of its assets. The company has also established a dedicated team to focus on Northern Ireland’s transition to net zero, working with key stakeholders to identify and promote strategies that deliver on net zero goals in the most cost-effective way for consumers and ensuring security of supply is maintained.

Things to know about Power-To-X

What is Power-To-X?

Power-to-X (PtX) refers to a suite of technologies that convert electricity, especially from renewable sources, into other forms of energy, commodities, or materials, such as hydrogen, methane, synthetic fuels, or even chemicals and materials for industrial processes. Central to the PtX concept is the utilization of surplus renewable energy, which can be irregular and mismatched in time with demand, to produce storable and transportable energy carriers or raw materials. This process involves electrolysis to produce hydrogen, a foundational element of the PtX framework, which can then be further converted or used directly in various applications. The significance of PtX lies in its potential to decarbonize sectors hard to electrify, such as heavy transport, aviation, and industrial processes, thereby playing a pivotal role in the transition towards a sustainable, low-carbon energy system. By facilitating the storage and transportation of renewable energy across sectors and borders, PtX technologies not only enhance energy security but also contribute to the stabilization of the electrical grid by providing a demand-responsive outlet for excess renewable energy. Consequently, Power-to-X is emerging as a cornerstone strategy in the global endeavor to achieve energy transition, offering a versatile approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing towards climate neutrality.

Advantages of Power-To-X

1. Flexibility in Energy Sources
Power-To-X technology stands out for its ability to utilize a wide range of energy sources, including renewable ones like solar and wind. This flexibility not only helps in reducing dependency on fossil fuels but also allows for the optimization of energy production based on availability and cost.

2. Enhanced Energy Storage
One of the significant advantages of Power-To-X is its capability to convert excess electricity into other forms of energy, such as hydrogen, which can be stored and transported. This process addresses the challenge of energy storage, especially for renewables that are subject to fluctuations, thereby ensuring a stable energy supply.

3. Reduction in Carbon Emissions
By leveraging Power-To-X, industries can significantly reduce carbon emissions. The technology enables the conversion of CO2 into useful products, thereby not only mitigating the impact of existing CO2 emissions but also contributing to a circular carbon economy.

4. Support for Decarbonization Efforts
Power-To-X is instrumental in decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors, including transportation and manufacturing. By providing green alternatives to traditional fuels and materials, it supports global efforts towards achieving climate goals and transitioning to a sustainable future.

What are common B2B Use-Cases for Power-To-X?

Power-to-X technology is revolutionizing how industries manage and utilize energy, offering a variety of B2B applications that span multiple sectors. In the manufacturing sector, Power-to-X is pivotal for enabling energy-intensive processes to decarbonize their operations. By converting surplus renewable energy into hydrogen or other synthetic fuels, manufacturers can reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, enhancing sustainability and compliance with environmental regulations. The transportation industry benefits significantly from Power-to-X, particularly in heavy-duty and long-haul segments. Companies are adopting synthetic fuels and hydrogen, produced through Power-to-X processes, for trucks, ships, and even aircraft. This shift not only helps in reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also aligns with global efforts to transition towards cleaner energy sources. In the energy sector, Power-to-X finds a critical use-case in energy storage and grid balancing. Excess renewable energy can be converted into more stable forms like hydrogen, which can be stored and then reconverted into electricity during peak demand periods. This capability is essential for enhancing grid reliability and maximizing the utilization of renewable energy sources. Lastly, the chemical industry utilizes Power-to-X by incorporating green hydrogen into the production of green ammonia and methanol. These are key feedstocks for fertilizers and plastics, offering a path towards more sustainable chemical manufacturing processes. Through these diverse applications, Power-to-X technology is carving a niche in the B2B realm, contributing to a more sustainable and efficient industrial landscape.

Current Technology Readiness Level (TLR) of Power-To-X

Power-To-X technology, a pivotal component in the transition towards renewable energy, currently spans various Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) depending on the specific application, with most falling between TRL 4 (technology validated in lab) and TRL 7 (demonstration in operational environment). This range reflects the technology's evolution from theoretical concepts to practical implementations. The lower end of the spectrum, primarily occupied by emerging chemical processes for converting electricity into fuels or feedstock, remains in lab-scale validation due to challenges in energy efficiency, catalyst durability, and upscaling. On the higher end, certain applications like electrolysis for hydrogen production have reached more advanced stages, demonstrating viability in real-world settings. This advancement is attributable to significant breakthroughs in electrode materials and system design, enhancing efficiency and reducing costs. However, widespread commercial deployment, corresponding to TRL 9, is hindered by infrastructural, regulatory, and market acceptance barriers. The variegated TRL landscape of Power-To-X underscores the technology's potential and the technical hurdles that must be overcome to realize its full promise in facilitating a sustainable energy future.

What is the Technology Forecast of Power-To-X?

In the Short-Term, the Power-To-X (PtX) technology is expected to focus on enhancing electrolyzer efficiency and integrating renewable energy sources. Immediate advancements will likely involve optimizing existing electrolysis processes, such as PEM and alkaline electrolyzers, for better efficiency and lower costs. The integration of PtX systems with solar and wind farms will start to become more commonplace, allowing for the direct conversion of intermittent renewable energy into more versatile forms, such as hydrogen, for easier storage and transportation. Mid-Term developments are set to expand the applications of PtX technologies beyond hydrogen production, venturing into the creation of synthetic fuels and chemicals like methanol, ammonia, and synthetic hydrocarbons. This phase will likely witness significant breakthroughs in carbon capture utilization, enabling the sustainable production of carbon-neutral fuels. The advancements in catalyst technology and process optimization during this period will play a pivotal role in improving the efficiency and reducing the costs of these synthetic processes. Looking into the Long-Term, the expectation is that PtX technologies will be at the heart of a global energy transition, supporting a fully renewable energy system. Innovations will potentially include the development of new electrolysis methods and the widespread adoption of artificial photosynthesis, mimicking nature's efficiency at converting sunlight into energy carriers. This era could also see PtX solutions becoming a primary method for grid balancing and seasonal energy storage, ultimately facilitating a significant reduction in global carbon emissions by providing a sustainable, circular energy economy.
