Weld overlay cladding is a surfacing variation of welding that deposits or applies surfacing material, usually to improve corrosion, heat or wear resistance. Weld overlay cladding provides a metallurgical bond between the layer of corrosion, heat or wear resistant material and base material (or substrate); the cladded part behaves as one material. Compared to low carbon steel materials, corrosion resistant alloys (CRA) offer greater corrosion or wear resistant properties as they contain relatively high content of elements such as chromium, nickel, copper, molybdenum, niobium and cobalt. In most cases, corrosion resistance is required only on areas that are in contact with the corrosive or erosive medium.
